Product Description

The Suribachi is often regarded as an essential to any Japanese kitchen. The Japanese mortar and pestle allows for a greater degree of control when bruising, crushing, grinding or pounding ingredients.

This ceramic mortar or grinding bowl is handcrafted in Iga, Mie Prefecture using local materials and following traditional techniques. The unglazed interior has been hand combed to create a variety of textured patterns to help effectively grind ingredients.

Iga-ware uses materials and glazes that withstands the test of time – resulting in a strong ceramic which is suitable for breaking and grinding sharp and hard ingredients.

Please note due to the handcrafted nature of these pieces, each one is unique and may vary slightly in size. Pestles are sold separately.

Azmaya works in close collaboration with artisans, craftsman, and local small-scale manufacturers within Japan to produce high quality contemporary items that celebrate local materials, traditional Japanese handcrafts, and regional techniques.
