Meet the Maker: Kyoto Asahiya

Shop Kyoto Asahiya's traditional Buddhist prayer beads and bracelets.

With a focus on traditional Japanese pieces handcrafted in Kyoto, Kyoto Asahiya makes Juzus (Japanese prayer beads) and wooden bracelets. Kyoto is a well known centre where Japanese prayer beads are expertly handmade.

Buddhists within Japan use these prayer beads (Juzu, Neju, etc), which are traditionally meant for counting the number of times a mantra is recited, breaths during meditation, repeating a mantra, and in various other ways. They are also known as ojuzu (数珠, counting beads) or onenju (念珠, thought beads). Different Buddhist sects in Japan have different shaped juzus, and use them differently.
