Meet the Maker: Jyuzan

Shop Jyuzan's Japanese Ceramics.

Jyuzan is a Japanese ceramic studio with over 130 years of history that produces Mino-yaki in the Gifu region of Japan. Every step of the process is done by hand using a unique mix of various clays including local clay from the mino region, and pottery stone from Okayama Prefecture – which are mixed, crushed and kneaded in house.

Jyuzan uses a slow baking technique by firing the kiln at a high temperature of 1300°C for over 40 hours. By using uneven kiln temperatures, and uneven firing results, each piece holds subtle differences in colour and finish. This is done intentionally so that each ceramic is individual and unique.
