Product Description

An antique Japanese Igezara porcelain plate. Featuring a circular form, waved 'pie crust' rim, and printed blue design with a pattern of bamboo, antique screens, trees, and flowers. This plate is perfect for decoration or serving mains and sides.

Igezara pieces with "piecrust", "scalloped" or "notched" rim. Ige is a Saga prefecture dialect for thorn. Zara = dish. When these came out of the kiln, the pinched areas were 'sharp as thorns' before being smoothed down. Thus Igezara = Thorn plates. The form is very common in the Meiji (1868-1913) and Taisho period (1913-1926) and particularly associated with printed patterns.

Igezara was made for the common man and usually thickly potted so withstand wear and tear and daily use. The generally accepted period Igezara was made is 1880 - 1910 but may have had some early and late examples.
