Meet the Maker: Nankei Pottery

Based in the ceramic heartland of Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, Nankei Pottery has been a steward of Japanese craftsmanship since 1913. Originally founded as a clay refiner, the family-run kiln eventually transitioned into master potters, specializing in the 300-year-old tradition of Banko-yaki (Banko ware). Today, under fourth-generation leadership, they are renowned for their "Banjikyusu" philosophy—the belief that even in difficult times, pausing to brew a perfect cup of tea can turn misfortune into fortune. Every piece, from their signature purple-clay teapots to their minimalist tableware, is managed entirely in-house to ensure a seamless blend of historical technique and modern functional beauty.
